In this tour we are going to visit some of the most interesting castles in Croatia: the Trakošćan castle of Drašković family in Zagorje region; and the Old Town castle of Erdody family in Varaždin. They both hold a special significance and have lots of stories and legends. They are situated within a comfortable daytour from Zagreb. It is said that the Zagorje region has the largest concentration of castles in Europe when considering the size of the region (over 50 castles). The region is a beautiful lush green area, relaxing, with lots of trees and hills, with intense green color in spring and summer. Besides seeing the two castle, we will also stroll through the baroque town of Varaždin for additional cultural experience. This town’s center has many palaces, old houses, charming churches and shops, and cute cherub angels hovering from many windows. It’s the town of culture, music and bicycles.

The Northern Croatian Castles tour starts from where you are staying in Zagreb. Our guide will meet you in the loby of your hotel. From there, you will depart towards the Northern Croatia, the beautiful Zagorje region.

The first stop of this tour is Trakoscan castle, which is the most representative castle in Croatia. It is also one of the few that managed to preserve its interior as it was during the last renovation by its original owner – the Drašković family. The castle itself is from the 14th century, one of the oldest ones in Croatia. Since that time it managed to preserve a lot of its original look. It was renovated in the 19th century, which was one of the first renovation procedure of such calibre in Croatia. The renovation is done in a German renaissance style, reminding to a degree of some popular European castles. It is situated amidst the mountainous hills and a beautiful lake.

The second castle that we will see will be the Old Town castle in Varazdin, made by a powerful Erdody family, who came to Croatia from Hungary. The castle is said to have been built in the 13th century, but its present look is from the renovation done in the 16th century. Inside is a museum with furniture and various items that belonged to the aristocratic family of Erdody. Optional lunch and walk through Varazdin, to get a feel of the old capital of Croatia.
